2010 Top Best Summer Movies

We've found this to be an interesting summer for movies. Not earth shattering by any means, but not a total dud either. Toy Story 3 and Inception were the highlights for us, and I think they were for most people. Toy Story 3 has made over 400 billion dollars worldwide with Inception closing in at near 300 billion. We won't forget Avatar either, but that's in it's own class as is its maker James Cameron.

I'm sure there'll be some movies that we leave out that you all will be yelling bloody murder about so just comment away since we always appreciate dissent, it's a good thing over apathy. There have been some quiet contenders that we mentioned in our earlier review on here that most people may have heard about or not at all. One that was pretty cool on the small side was The Kids Are All Right about two lesbian mothers (Julianne Moore and Annette Benning) who wind up discovering who the sperm donor is for their child (Mark Ruffalo playing a wonderful lowkey role). What we loved about this one was it didn't focus on a big gay marriage debate; it just was a film about a relationship with its ups and down like any other. It's well worth checking out and the cast really bring out the best in this gem of a film

We loved The Expendibles just for the kickass shoot em up style, and the fact that Sylvestor Stallone was able to bring together all our big action stars of the past and present (basically just Jason Statham) was the perfect guilty pleasure. Plus, it showed us once again that Sylvestor Stallone is alive and kicking and knows what we want in our action films. We've already weighed in on Eli Roth's The Last Exorcism and gave it another shot just to make sure we weren't just being mean to Eli Roth.

Sadly, the 3D technology is already getting raped by Hollywood with films like Clash Of the Titans and Airbender so hopefully audiences will speak up by not going to these films to make Hollywood once again realize that you just can't throw anything out there expecting the ticket buying public to rush out to them in droves. Especially in this economy no matter what the news channels keep trying to tell us that things are looking up.

Blockbusters (Toys From Recent Movies, Etc)

Every year, there will be at least one or two big movies with licensed toys packing the shelves. These are the Hot Toys, the ones that every kid absolutely HAS to have.

Sometimes, these toys have a real lasting appeal. Some of us still treasure the memories of playing with our Ninja Turtles, or we still own our Jurassic Park dinosaurs (Geez, are we really parents already?!).

But then, there are some toys that come and go in the blink of an eye. These ones wind up in the bargain bin at the toy store a month after the film leaves theatres, and most kids lose interest just as quickly. Remember the movie Congo? Yeah, neither do the kids who owned all of the action figures way back when.

With licensed toys, the basic rule that applies to storytelling also applies to buying toys. The only characters that really matter are the ones that we'll still remember years after seeing the movie. Even parents can name half the cast of Finding Nemo, we'll probably always have a soft spot in our hearts for Wall-E, every single one of Jim Henson's Muppets, and Indiana Jones. All of those properties had toys packing the shelves, and many of us still own our childhood favourites. The reason why is simple: Those were interesting, endearing characters. When movie producers make a film with dollar signs in their eyes, hoping to sell a lot of toys at the expense of telling a good story, you wind up with Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin, which tanked so bad, in both box office and toy sales, that the Batman movie franchise actually had to take a near decade-long hiatus.

We're not saying you need to tell your kids what to like. Heck, some kids loved Batman & Robin, there's nothing wrong with that. Get your kids what they like. Just bear in mind that a lot of the buzz and the hype surrounding these summer blockbusters is generated by the studios in hopes of suckering parents into buying junky toys that the kids probably won't even like.

If there's one piece of advice we can give on this subject; don't buy your kids the toys until they've seen the movie.

It's not uncommon for kids to see the commercials for a movie and say "That looks fun!" They ask for all the toys and even clip out the proof of purchase cards on the back of the packages and send away for the mail-order secret decoder ring. Then... they actually watch the movie, and... it winds up being kind of boring. They put all the toys in a box, put the box under the bed, and forget all about it. Then a month or two later, they get the decoder ring in the mail, and they say "what the heck is this?" You could name dozens of movies like this off the top of your head, if it weren't for the fact that you've already forgotten that they exist!

That's how it can be with hype sometimes. It's easy to buy into, even when the characters the toymaker is selling aren't really all that interesting. Character toys are all about coming up with new stories for your favourite fictional characters. If the characters are boring or cliché, it can be tough to come up with any memorable adventures. Better characters make for better creative toys, and better memories.

The Snuggie Blanket For Two

OK, I couldn't resist. The Snuggie for Two? What is the world coming to? I think maneuvering around in a snuggie is not as simple as at looks but adding another person in there with you would prove rather difficult. I don't think this is the world's most functional garment but I'm getting one anyway.

I've come to the point where I've fully accepted that the snuggie has become a big part of pop culture and will go down in history as one of the silliest products ever brought to market. So, for me, it's important to own a mint condition, unopened, original two person blanket with sleeves. This will be my redemption for actually playing with my original Darth Vader action figure in 1978. I was only 10, but how could my parents let me play with a toy that would be worth thousands of dollars 30 years later? What were they thinking?

So I'm going to be prepared because in another 30 years these things are going to be sought after. And it's not going be like Woodstock either. You know everybody over 50 not only claims to remember Woodstock, but they were all actually there. Well, not this time. I don't believe anyone will boast that they owned a snuggie. Even if there is photographic evidence I can already hear people using the "Photoshop Defense."

Yes, when the Snuggie craze, even though it shows no sign of slowing down, goes the way of the Steam Engine, I'm gonna have mine because humanity will be wondering how did these things get so popular. I imagine future scientists and sociologists will try and hypothesize what went wrong with humans during this period and they are gonna need some evidence. So I will have it for them

You won't catch me wearing my Couples Snuggie around the house with my significant other but I'm willing to bet that one day you will see one on display in the Smithsonian. This craze has become far too big to ignore. I won't say that it has changed history or altered the human race somehow, but our fascination with the ridiculous will always be compelling.

I'm sure this two person blanket with sleeves would be fun to have around and people are going to buy them a ton at a time so let me be sure to explain that this is a gigantic blanket with four sleeves and two pockets best used when sitting still on the couch. With two people inside, even getting up during a commercial break will take careful planning and solid communication, but I'm sure people will try it.

I can't wait to see the new commercial and I look forward to all the Jokes and Spoofs which will be made at the expense of Snuggie's idea to bring people closer together. Literally! But, I have to give credit to the person who has gotten the whole world hooked on throw rugs with arm holes.

James Bond scalextrix set, the secret agent James Bond has been a favourite the world over for many years, largely due to the fact of all the gadgets that he has doing his various and dangerous mission's, combine combine that with the thrill of Scalextric racing cars then you have quite a combination, of thrills and excitement as you are racing around the track, trying to out run your enemy. This would be one of the ultimate boys toys.

5. Indiana Jones role play whip, now you too can become your own adventurer, with this realistic whip similar to similar to the one that Indiana Jones uses, in his adventures in the famous movie series.

You can now have the realistic whipping sound right in the palm of your hand, there is a switch for turning the sounds on and off, this toy is a must for any, up and coming adventurer. It even plays the Indiana Jones theme tune as well.

6. Batman the dark knight bat pod, this must be one of the most ultimate Christmas must have toys of 2008, fresh from the new Batman movie the dark Knight, now you have the chance to own your own copy of the infamous bat pod, you will need all your wits about you as you battle the joker in combat.

Wrex the lovable robot dog with there being a heavy emphasis on electronic toys this Christmas, why not have your own robot dog, wrex is just adorable he is just like the real thing, and has three wants these call of nature, food and exercise. He also has three built in moods which are happy crazy and angry. This is one adorable pet that you must have.

8. Tri-bot it doesn't get much better than this as far as toys are concerned, so why not have your own personal robot, tri bot has a pop up head, and his eyebrows move up and down, you can also play games with him these are pattern, maze and minefield he also has a built in alarm. What more could you ask for in a toy.

9. Cars lightening McQueen, this is based on the popular Pixar movie cars, this is a remote-controlled version of the popular character, he will do all sorts of tricks for you such as dizzy doughnuts and they are up to 120 different movements, with lots of phrases from the movie as well.

10. Dr Who 18 inch supreme dalek remote control, be in control of your very own Doctor Who Dalek from the ever popular TV series, the Dalek will move around like the real thing which you can control from a remote control unit. The lights on its head light up when it speaks just like the real thing. It will say things like halt all you will be exterminated. And many other popular phrases, you can also programme it to do other things like follow a moving object.

Gohan's Early Life

Goku and Chi-Chi gave birth to Gohan in 757 Age. This was about a year after Chi-Chi and Goku married, which also followed the World Martial Arts Tourney. Soon after, Raditz, originally looking for his brother, kidnapped him. This is when Raditz realized that Gohan, though shy, was actually stronger than his father Goku.

During the battle to save Gohan, he broke free of his space pod where he was being captive and helped fight Raditz, where he delivered a devastating blow, which gave Piccolo and Goku time to kill Raditz. This also killed Goku in the process.

After this time, Piccolo took it upon himself to train Gohan, after witnessing Gohan's potential, even as a small child. Piccolo left Gohan in the wilderness to fend for himself, while he watched over him. After that, Piccolo taught Gohan to fight. However, during training Gohan looked at a full moon, which turned him into an ape. Piccolo had to destroy the moon to revert the changes done to Gohan by looking at it.

It came time for Gohan and Piccolo to fight Nappa and Vegeta, but he had a hard time. Gohan was not able to control his fears as his younger mentality reared its head. Because of this, Gohan was not effective in battle, except in short pauses.

All this set a motion a grueling future for he, whom at an extremely early age would fight several strong opponents to save his family, friends, and planet Earth. It was also during this time that Gohan learned how to go Super Saiyan under training of his father. Gohan also obtains Super Sayain 2 after witnessing an ally's death. After a devastating fight between Gohan, Goku, their allies against Cell (Perfect Cell and Super Perfect Cell), the Earth was safe against threats for about seven years. Gohan stays with his mother and younger brother, and then enters high school.

1. Control the message and presentation of the message. Engage the audience by telling a compelling story and keep them engaged.
2. Tell a compelling story. You can not bore anyone into staying involved. Keep them engaged on the edge of their seats.
3. Engage and interact with the audience. People love to be involved we want to be as one with those on the screens.
4. Market your website and text accounts. Also push your product tell them how to order.
5. Keep them asking for more. Repeat business is the key. Know you lifetime value.
6. The underdog can win. Think of Hurt Locker vs Avatar
7. Family values do matter. Think of the Blindside
8. Make them walk down a red carpet to get to your product.
9. Believe in your product and strut it out because no one else will.

If we strive to entertain and tell a compelling story with our ads we can drive higher response rates and readership rates. To quote the late David Oligvy, "You can not bore anyone into buying your product." We all want to be entertained, no one does business with those that bore them. Make your clients walk down your red carpet.

Beowulf - The Poem, the Movie, the Figures

The Origins

Beowulf is an old English epic poem thought to have been composed sometime in the middle ages.

The poem tells the story of Beowulf and his battles against three different adversaries. A truly epic poem Beowulf has survived through the centuries and is the only surviving example of Anglo Saxon heroic poetry.

Despite being a mainly Scandinavian story with most of the storyline taking part in Scandinavia rather than England it has risen to become anational English epic.

The only remaining manuscript is untitled but the story became known as Beowulf in the 19th Century.

The poem consists of no less than 3,183 lines and the events described in the poem take place during the 5th or 6th Century. This can be confirmed by some of the historical events that take place in the poem and can be dated back to this period. There are many scholars who have the manuscript agree that many of the events and personalities depicted in the poem are historically accurate and also appear in many Scandinavian sagas.

It is though to have been first composed in the 7th Century, probably in East Anglia and although it deals with mainly heroic matters there are a few Christian viewpoints expressed in the poem, but most scholars believe that these were probably inserted at a latter date.

The author remains unknown and it is thought the poem was originally formed through oral tradition and passed down by scops, or tale singers. The author is considered to have been very imaginative in the way that he combined both pagan elements with traditional accounts of heroic and historical events of the time with his own imagination.

The only surviving manuscript of Beowulf is the work of two, rather than one, scribes who transcribed the poem from another earlier manuscript and it now resides in the British Library.

Beowulf is a hero of the Geats and the poem he has to battle three antagonists:

The first of these is Grendel, who is attacking and destroying the inhabitants of Heorot in Denmark, then later Grendel's mother and finally a dragon.

The first of these battles occurs when Beowulf and his men spend a night in Heorot.

After they have all fallen asleep Grendel enters the hall attacking and devouring one of Beowulf's men. Beowulf feigns sleep as Grendel approaches and then he leaps up grabbing Grendel's arm in a wrestling hold. In the ensuing battle Beowulf's men draw their swords and rush to his aid but their swords shatter and break on Grendel's thorny spikes and iron tough skin. With the throes of their battle threatening to bring the hall down on top of them Beowulf finally tears Grendel's arm from its socket and he runs off into the marshes to die in his home.

After celebrating Grendel's death, Hroogar and his men sleep in the great hall but all is not safe as Grendel's mother attacks the party, seeking revenge for the death of her son and so she kills Hroogar's trusted friend and warrior.

Determined to rid the town of both Grendel and his mother Beowulf, Hroogar and his men track her down to her lair under an eerie lake.

Unfero, a warrior, presents Beowulf with Hrunting, a sword, as he prepares for battle.

Prepared, and ready for battle Beowulf dives into the lake in search of Grendel's mother.

Grendel's mother quickly alerted to his presence, attacks him but unable to harm him through his armour she drags to the bottom of the lake. Surrounded by the remains of the many men they have killed the two engage in a fierce battle.

At first Grendel's mother gains the upper hand as Beowulf's sword Hrunting is unable to inflict any harm on her and so he throws it to one side protected only by his armour from her ferocious attack. Desperately Beowulf reaches out and grabs a sword from Grendel's mother's armoury and hefting it fiercely over his head he brings it down swiftly beheading her.

Venturing further into their lair he finds Grendel's body which he also beheads and then returns to the surface where his men await him.

After his adventures Beowulf returns home to live peacefully. Many years pass and Beowulf has become the king of his people. Then one day a slave by the name of Earnaness steals a golden goblet from a dragon's lair.

On awakening and finding the golden goblet missing the dragon leaves it's cave bellowing in rage and anger at its theft. So he wanders the land hunting for the thief and his goblet burning everything in its path.

Beowulf hears of the plight and he and his warriors approach to fight the dragon. But all of Beowulfs men, except for a young man named Wiglaf, are too afraid and run. So Wiglaf and Beowulf fight the dragon alone eventually killing it, but Beowulf is mortally wounded and soon dies from his injuries.

Beowulf is cremated and his ashes are buried high on a cliff overlooking the sea where his barrow, burial mound, can be seen by sailors.

Beowulf's people also decide to bury the dragon's treasure along with him instead of sharing it afraid that it is cursed.

There are many been different adaptions of Beowulf including books, plays and films. The latest is a new film due to be released November 2007 which although remains partly faithful to the original poem most of the plot elements are not.

Beowulf the Movie

The latest movie adaption of this old English heroic poem is said to be a cheerfully violent and strange take on the original Beowulf saga.

Although some parts of the movie remain faithful to the origins of the poem the majority of the plot are original and explore the relationship between Grendel and his mother and their motivation in more detail as well as what happens in Grendel's cave between his mother and Beowulf.

The film has been made using a special technique of digitally enhanced live action and will be released on November 16, 2007.

Two versions of the movie have been filmed and will be released simutaneously, a 3-D version and a standard 35 mm version. The 3-D version is to be screened in over a thousand using the same 3-D technology as used for Monster House, Chicken Little, and the 3-D release of The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The film will star Ray Winstone as Beowulf, Anthony Hopkins as King Hrothgar, Angelina Jolie as Grendel's mother, and Crispen Glover as Grendel.

Paramount pictures also recently agreed on a licensing agreement with McFarlane's Toys who will develope and produce action figures based on the upcoming motion picture.

Star Wars LEGO 2010 Review - Set 8098 Clone Turbo Tank

The 2nd wave of 2010 Star Wars Lego sets are due out in August. The wave includes 5 models and set 8098, the Clone Turbo Tank is the largest with 1139 pieces. This is the second Lego incarnation of the Republic's Military A6 Juggernaut tank with the initial release in 2005 to coincide with the release of Star Wars Episode Three Revenge of the Sith.

Back then it came with the rare figure of Mace Windu but this current version gives us two first release minifigures from the Clone Wars TV series, Cad Bane and Aalya Secura.

The Clone Wars Turbo Tank was featured in the Clone Wars television series season two premiere, The Holcron Heist, and the set comes with six figures that allow you to recreate alot of the action in that episode. Apart from Cad Bane and Aalya Secura the minifigures of Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano and two clone troopers round out the set.

The build is quite technical on the inside and while it is not very attractive it serves to make the model quite sturdy and a fun play, with the 10 extra large wheels a rarity in the Star Wars universe where most vehicles tend to fly or levitate. The tank can be carried around by one of the central technic pieces that protrude from the top, much like the AT-AT set from 2008, and it never feels in danger of falling apart. Lego has improved on the first release in a number of areas including the wheels which are more accurate this time around.

Priced at $119 US the set also comes with a small AT-RT Walker that can fold down and fit into the chassis of the tank. While fairly basic it allows one figure to sit in the allocated seat and ride around. Overall Lego have done a great job in bringing back this popular set from 2005, the first demanding high prices on the secondary market. The extra figures should make this highly appealing for fans.

Adhesive Photo Paper

Adhesive photo paper is just like an ordinary satin photo paper, with one important addition: an adhesive backside! And while an adhesive backside is seldom something we humans strive for, it makes adhesive photo paper all the more awesome! This backing allows you to print off a photo, then simply peel off the back of the paper and stick your photo anywhere you want to. Essentially, it turns your favorite picture into a sticker, which allows you to share it much more easily and much more widely with the masses - or your friends and family.

Are we excited about adhesive photo paper yet? I know I am! Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Using adhesive photo paper to brighten your day:

1. Take a close-up of your goldfish, then adjust the size to match your goldfish exactly. Print it off and stick it on the side of your fishbowl, just to see how long it takes people to notice.
2. Take a close-up of your goldfish, but instead of sticking it onto your fishbowl, stick it onto the side of the blender.
3. Remember that picture of your mother that she always hated? You know the one - with her hair all sticking up on one side, and her mouth open to yell/nag one of her children? Print that off, and stick it to her mirror in the morning. Life-size would make it even better.
4. Take pictures of yourself and a few of your friends in action poses, and stick them to cardboard. (A cereal box will do.) Then take your new action figures to the supermarket and see what fun ensues!
5. Stick pictures of rubber ducks all over the bathtub.
6. Stick pictures of real ducks all over the bathtub.
7. "Label" your briefcase with a picture of your three-year-old. If your family is the more dignified type, you can use a sweet studio picture. If your family is a little louder or wilder than most, you can use the picture in the high chair, with the Spaghetti-Os in his eyebrows.
8. Make some very creative, self-portrait return address labels. Even better - make some for someone else and gift them.
9. For those whose refrigerator looks like a natural disaster: take a picture of the fridge (preferably at a very frightening angle that highlights the lasagna spill on the bottom shelf,) and make a label that says, "Never again." Then clean the fridge. (You might want to take a picture of that, as well.)
10. Make a brilliant poster of your family, spoofing a popular movie.
